'Because in a split second, its gone...' (SOLD)
Back in 2012 my good friend from out on the F1 circuit Ben Fitz gave me Ayrton Senna’s Williams rear wing end plate to ‘make something with’. It took me maybe 18 months before the Eureka moment hit me…
Based on a well known quote from Ayrton ‘Because in a split second, it’s gone’, the full version of which is;
‘”You are doing something that nobody else is able to do, the same moment that you are seen as the best, the fastest and somebody that cannot be touched, you are enormously fragile. Because in a split second, it’s gone.”
From that, I’m not sure my concept for a two sided sculpture separated by a thin line, needs much explanation.
You can still see the sticker with the Williams serial number of the end plate from 1994, which identifies that this is version 2.
The section of tyre is from a destroyed set from another friend of mine, who drives Nakajimas 1987 Lotus in show events – the sister car to Ayrton’s that year.
Another point, and why it took me a while to come up with the concept, was that when creating this under no circumstances did I want to irreversibly affect the end plate from Ayrton’s last car…. everything that is attached is using holes that already existed in the structure, and could be removed. I don’t care what my art may be worth… I could never hold it on the same scale of reverence that should be maintained for items like this.
